I know, I know. I’m late with the post but I’ve been busy the past twenty four hours. I got to go home for the night during camp and was able to order Enfield Pizza, some good ole chicken bacon ranch, and slept in my own bed with air conditioning.
With that being said, yesterday for day seven we highlighted a playmaking defensive back from the Bayou that was a Heisman finalist. Now today for day 6, we’ll take a look at a quarterback who won the Heisman.
Baker Mayfield was born in Austin, Texas and attended Lake Travis High School where he played quarterback. Mayfield was a three star recruit coming out and walked on at Texas Tech.
As a true freshman walk on, Mayfield started the Red Raiders season opener due to injuries at the quarterback position. He would go onto start five games for Tech that season and pass for twenty three hundred yards with twelve touchdowns.
For his efforts as a freshman, Mayfield was named Big 12 Conference Freshman Offensive Player of the Year. He announced after the season that he’d be leaving Texas Tech.
When he officially transferred to Oklahoma, he was ineligible to play because of the in conference transfer but he appealed because he was not a scholarship player but the appeal was denied. Mayfield would sit out the whole 2014 season.
In 2015, Mayfield earned the starting job and played in all thirteen games. He passed for thirty seven hundred yards and thirty six touchdowns while also rushing for four hundred and five yards and seven touchdowns.
Mayfield’s efforts earned him First Team Big 12 and All American honors while also being named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. He also won his first Bulsworth Award which goes to the nations best walk on.
The following season, Mayfield passed for thirty nine hundred yards with forty touchdowns. Those stats earned him his second, First Team Big 12 appearance and was once again named the Burlsworth Award winner.
In Mayfield’s senior season, he tallied forty six hundred passing yards with forty three touchdowns and won the Heisman Trophy. Along with the Heisman, Mayfield was named First Team Big 12, All American, Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, Sugar Bowl MVP, AP Player of the Year, won the Davey O’Brien Award, the Walter Camp Award, and the Maxwell Award.
Mayfield came under fire for his actions when the Sooners played a dog shit Kansas squad. He held his crotch and yelled “fuck you” to the Jayhawks sideline and also turned to the Kansas fans and told them to “go cheer on basketball”.
Following the 2017 season, Mayfield was selected first overall by the Cleveland Browns in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Tomorrow for day 5, we’ll highlight a big bodied pass rusher from the SEC.
