#82. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
We’re at the mid day point and you’re probably dragging at work right now on Monday. Let’s take a quick break and look at my 82nd favorite film of all time, The Grand Budapest Hotel. The Grand Budapest Hotel was directed by Wes Anderson and released in 2014. It stars a cavalcade of stars with Ralph Fiennes and Tony Revolori with supporting roles from Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Saoirse Ronan, Jeff Goldblum, Owen Wilson, Ed Norton, and Bill Murray.
This is the first of four Wes Anderson flicks that make my 100 favorite films and over the past few years, I’ve really fallen in love with his style as a director. The Grand Budapest Hotel showcases prime Wes Anderson directing as there is many symmetrical shots of the hotel or on the train, quick panning shots when there is witty banter being had, and vibrant colors with pink and purple. It also has another Wes Anderson staple with a massive cast in bizarre roles like Willem Dafoe as a hitman and Jude Law as a young writer.
In the whole world of Wes Anderson, The Grand Budapest Hotel might have my favorite scene ever when Ralph Fiennes goes to claim the Boy with Apple painting and Adrien Brody rebuffs him. “You’re not getting Boy with Apple you God damn little fruit!”
