Yesterday we highlighted an Irish tight end and today, we look at two more tight ends in honor of being 87 days out. The first guy caught passes in South Bend and the second guy played his college ball on the west coast.
Dave Casper started his Notre Dame career as an offensive tackle where he earned Honorable Mention All-America in 1972 before transitioning to tight end.
1973 was the year that Casper broke out when he caught 19 passes for 4 touchdowns and 317 yards. He was named the Irish Offensive MVP, All American, and Notre Dame to a National Championship win.
Casper has been apart of many big plays through his career like the Ghost to the Post and the Holy Roller but he really got after it when he was catching balls in South Bend.
The next guy played decades after Casper graduated from Notre Dame and he played on the west coast at Stanford.
Zach Ertz attended Stanford from 2009-2012 and redshirted his freshman year. After his redshirt season, Ertz found his way to the starting lineup and never even looked back.
In Zach Ertz’s senior season, he blew his previous numbers out of the water. He reeled in 69 passes for 898 yards and 6 touchdowns on his way to winning the PAC 12, making first team All PAC 12, and first team All American.
His career stat line ended with 112 receptions for 1,434 yards and 15 touchdowns throughout 37 games.
Tomorrow we’ll be looking at one of my favorite college players of all time, a guy that was electric every time he touched the turf.
