Yesterday for day 88 and the end of May, I highlighted the Jets newest weapon at tight end who played at Ohio State. Today for day 87 I stay on the theme of tight ends with a kid that’s been a spark plug on the Notre Dame offense and will be a star on Sundays very soon.
Michael Mayer was a 4 star recruit coming out of Covington Catholic High School and was rated number 3 overall at the tight end position. He held offers from Alabama, Georgia, and Penn State, but opted to play for the real Tight End U, Notre Dame.
As a true freshman, Mayer saw time right off the rip in South Bend. The Bluegrass State native caught 42 passes going for 450 yards and 2 scores. His dominance as a true freshman earned him Freshman All American First Team, Third Team All ACC, All ACC Academic team.
This past season was a breakout one for Mayer. He was Jack Coans top option as he caught 71 passes for 840 yards and 7 touchdowns. This elite performance earned him All Independent First Team, Fourth Team All American, and was a John Mackey Award Semifinalist. Tomorrow for day 86, I’ll be covering another tight end; one that plays at a rival of Notre Dame and is from Connecticut.
