#96. Step Brothers (2009)
Good morning readers! What a day to be alive and have the ability to read about my 100 Favorite Movies. Coming in at number 96 is the second film on this list from Adam McKay, Step Brothers. Step Brothers is a 2008 comedy starring Will Ferrell and John C. Riley with Adam Scott, Richard Jenkins, and Mary Steenburgen in supporting roles.
If you’re around my age and you’re a guy, you love this movie. For me, it was one of my first introductions to comedy movies. Again, probably not the best judgement call from my dad, but he showed me this when I was either seven or eight. We watched it in the basement at my grandparents house and from that day forward would quote it to each other. Whether we would say “I was watching COPS”, “I know you touched my drum set”, or “It’s the fucking Catalina Wine Mixer”, we’d say it to each other and laugh hysterically.
John C. Riley and Will Ferrels dynamic together as adult losers who have a glaring disdain for one another is second to none and never fails to disappoint. Richard Jenkins as John C. Rileys dad and Mary Steenburgen as Ferrels mom was dynamite casting along with Adam Scott and Rob Riggle as Ferrels antagonists. Everyone has their own personal favorite scenes from Step Brothers and mine has to be whole madness of the Catalina Wine Mixer. From Horatio Sanz screaming about only playing 80s Billy Joel to Dale and Brennans duet, it hits every time.
