Took yesterday off because I was a little busy and when I finally sat down to write my article, I got a text about going to get sushi and then my friends and I watched Se7en. Somethings are bigger, not many, but quality time with friends and teammates is bigger.
With that being said, that is what Alt Rock Autumn is about. It’s about being with your friends and family and I thought of a perfect song that has exemplified the past few weeks with my friends and I up at school.
O.A.R. makes their first appearance on Alt Rock Autumn with their 1997 song Black Rock. Black Rock is the third song off The Wanderer album, it follows one of the bands biggest songs, That Was A Crazy Game of Poker.
Black Rock has a light guitar that gives me beachish vibes that pairs very nicely with the mellow vocals from lead singer Marc Roberge. The drums pick up about twenty seconds in and give a nice relaxing feeling.
The reason I feel like Black Rock fits is because for the band, Black Rock is a place that the band members would hangout in high school. It was a wooded area along a section of Black Rock Road in Germantown where they would meet up.
Up at school, we have a few different places where my friends and I will hang out. Whether it’s the notorious 02 study lounge to watch Monday Night Football or the lounge near the laundry room where we’ll meet before we go out, we make it our little slice of home.
One of the lines from Black Rock that hit home for me was when Roberge sings “On the black rock is where I spend my time, Writing a memory or writing a rhyme”.
Whenever we hangout at our on campus Black Rock, the 02 study lounge, I’m usually writing an article for this blog. When Roberge sings “writing a memory or writing a rhyme” he’s writing songs which is something he’s passionate about. He’s also doing it with his friends.
When I sit down to write an article in the study lounge with my friends around, it’s so relaxing.
Like I said before, Alt Rock Autumn is about being with your friends and relaxing and doing something you like. Black Rock embodies this.
