Today was a great day. The weather gave me unreal Alt Rock Autumn vibes because it was sunny and sixty out. I spent the night down in Chatham with my parents and family friends and on my drive back to campus I took the scenic route.
While I thought about playing my Alt Rock Autumn playlist, I decided to shuffle my New Music playlist which consists of music and artists that I’ve recently found. On that, the song Life Goes On by Oliver Tree came on and it just hit so hard while I was driving with the windows down around Harwich.
Oliver Tree is an interesting artist because he’s the mix between alt rock and nerd core music which are two of my favorite genres. Unreal sound with an odd rhythm that just seems to work.
Life Goes On is the lead off song from Trees 2021 album Ugly is Beautiful: Shorter, Thicker & Uglier (Deluxe).
While Tree released Ugly is Beautiful in 2020, he released the deluxe version the following year with Life Goes On on it. The deluxe album adds seven new songs that were not a part of the Ugly is Beautiful drop in 2020.
The banger peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart on August 1st this year and was twenty second on the Billboard Global (excluding U.S.) chart on October 16th.
Now if you listen to the song, it doesn’t sound like any Alt Rock that’s been on the series before. It has a produced electric beat behind it, but that’s what todays version of Alt Rock is today.
Even bands that use a guitar use produced beats like Cage the Elephant and Paramore so it’s not like this is a rare occurrence.
What I really love about this song is that it’s awesome for the spring, summer, and fall because it just has an unreal vibe that makes you feel like you’re the main character on top of the world.
The song begins with what sounds like muffled horns with a heavy thumping beat in the background and then about ten seconds in, Tree begins singing.
Much like Still Into You by Paramore that I covered a few days ago, the song doesn’t have tremendous depth. It’s about a guy and girl and that no matter what happens between the guy and girl, life goes on.
While it is simple, it’s still an awesome song. Songs can lack depth, but still hit.
Tomorrow we’ll get back to some classic Alt Rock. Maybe Nirvana or the Foo Fighters will make an appearance, possibly the Killers.
