And just like that, the Alt Rock Autumn series is coming to an end on Halloween. I’ve been toiling over what song to end this series with and it’s been pretty difficult.
With that being said, the song I landed on was from a band whose making their first appearance on the series. Welcome Third Eye Blind with their hit song Semi-Charmed Life.
Semi-Charmed Life just absolutely bangs and deserves a spot on this list so here it is at the buzzer.
Third Eye Blind released the song in February of 1997 as a single and it blew up in the U.S.
The song reached number one on both the U.S. Mainstream Top 40 chart and U.S. Alternative Airplay chart. It finished 1997 as the number one U.S. Modern Rock Track.
Globally, Semi-Charmed Life was second on the Canadian Top Singles chart, third on the Canadian Alternative Rock chart, eighth on the Australian chart, and twentieth on the Icelandic chart.
Semi-Charmed Life has upbeat guitar and drums that create a “doo, doo, doot” rhythm that radiates heavy party vibes. Like no matter where you listen to Semi-Charmed Life, it feels as if you’re walking in the door at a party.
What’s weird about the song is that while you think it’s about living the good life, I believe it’s about someone doing drugs.
Some of the lyrics that point to this are “The sky was gold, it was rose, I was taking sips of it through my nose” and “And then I bumped up, I took the hit that I was given, Then I bumped again, then I bumped again”.
Weird concept, and one that also isn’t thought about when you listen to the song.
Well, Alt Rock Autumn has concluded. It’s been fun.
