The Monday Blues feel very, very, very real today. It’s about fifty five degrees with cold rain in Buzzards Bay right now and the only thing that’s getting me through this crappy autumn day is some Alt Rock.
I’m thinking I’ll rock with 3 AM by Matchbox Twenty. Gives me upbeat yet rainy day vibes and the lyrics sort of fit.
3 AM has a great guitar pace with light drums in the background that make the perfect “mellow” vibe for the season and for a rainy day like the one I’m currently living through.
This song is the big hit off Matchbox Twenty’s 1996 album, Yourself Or Someone Like You. The song hit number one on the Canadian Top Singles and Alternative Rock charts along with reaching the top spot on the U.S. Alternative Rock and Adult Top 40 charts.
Along with peaking at number one on the weekly charts in Canada and America, it finished 1998 at number two on the U.S. Adult Top 40 chart.
The song was originally written by Rob Thomas, Jay Stanley, John Leslie Goff, and Brian Yale in the early 90’s when they were together in the band Tabithas Secret. The song is inspired by Thomas growing up with a mother who was battling cancer. When Tabithas Secret broke up, the members who started Matchbox 20 dropped the song.
The reason I think of this song on a rainy day is because of certain lyrics. The song starts with “She says it's cold outside and she hands me my raincoat, She's always worried about things like that”.
Kind of makes me think of my mom telling me to grab a jacket on a cold day. Granted, she’d have me grab a real coat and not a rain jacket, but that’s beside the fact.
Another one that gives me immaculate rainy autumn day vibes is “And she only sleeps when it's raining”. While Thomas is talking about his mother with cancer, I’m not trying to compare us, but I sleep immaculately when there’s a little bit of rain pittering outside my window.
An all around awesome song and one of the only ones I really listen to from Matchbox 20. A good band, yet one I’m not a massive fan of.
