Breaking: Stanford Won't Cut Any Athletic Teams
Stanford to keep all athletic teams that were on the chopping block including wrestling.
Wow, just wow. This is insane. What looked like a possible dark day for the wrestling community quickly was reversed when Stanford University reinstated the eleven teams that were set to be cut.
While the wrestling world rejoices from the announcement, I almost feel bad for some of these student athletes in the aspect that many were set to transfer and compete at new universities next season. They are faced with a difficult choice now. Do they leave Stanford and continue their careers else where or compete for a university that tried to give them the axe?
National Champion Shane Griffith was prepared to head back to the east coast to wrestle for the University of North Carolina but now with the reinstatement, it looks like he’ll stay in Stanford.
What interests me about the whole situation is that if an athlete does transfer, they are faced with the challenge of finding a university or college that has the same academics as Stanford and a place they can continue playing the sport they love.
It’s reported that if the eleven teams were cut, 240 athletes would have been impacted along with 22 coaches.
This is an exciting day to see eleven teams being saved but I am extremely curious to see how next season unfolds for the teams especially wrestling.
