Buccaneers Outlast The Wildcats To Pickup Their Second Win Of The Season
The Bucs are picking up momentum.
Following a tough 16-10 loss on Saturday to Salve Regina, the Mass Maritime mens lacrosse team looked to bounce back against another university from Rhode Island, Johnson and Wales. The Bucs did so by winning 11-8 on their home turf on Taylors Point beating a team with a 4-2 record entering the contest.
This was a true team win as many players from freshman to seniors contributed in big ways. The player with the biggest defensive impact was junior defenseman and Brock Lesnar fanboy Leo Allgaier. Allgaier was named LEC Defensive Player of the Week last week and his defensive terror continued against the Wildcats as he secured 3 ground balls and forced 8 of the Buccaneers 15 turnovers.
On the offensive end, six total players netted goals. Junior Mitchell Maida buried 2, sophomore Jack Iversen had 1, sophomore Nick Lamattina with 3, junior Ryan Cameron netted 2, freshman Braeden Kosiewicz had 2, and junior Doug Walker recorded 1. Iversen and Maida led the team in points with 4 each.
Freshman goalkeeper Sean Lally, who took over early this season, played the entirety of the game allowing 8 goals with 10 saves on 18 shots. Mass Maritime out shot the Wildcats 21-18.
A large reason for the Buccaneers win was the teams discipline when it came to penalties. Mass Maritimes junior long-stick player Kevin Lynch committed the teams lone penalty, a tripping call in the third. Johnson and Wales committed 9 penalties for a total of 6 minutes, 5 penalties coming in the second half.
The big swing in the game came when Maritime flipped a switch in the fourth quarter. Heading into the final quarter of play the game was knotted at 7 a piece when Nick Lammattina netted two of his three goals and Maida buried one before the Wildcats Chris Calisto answered back to mack the score 10-8. With just north of three minutes left, Ryan Cameron iced the game with a goal to make the score 11-8.
Mass Maritime has a tough matchup this weekend at home against the Keene State Owls who are 3-3 on a big 2 game skid. This win builds a lot of momentum going into an important conference game; should be a chippy and exciting battle. Go Bucs.
