Fincher fans across the globe can be heard sobbing and howling. This sucks. It’s been rumored since early 2021 that David Fincher, the man who directed Fight Club and Se7en, would be directing a film titled The Killer starring Michael Fassbender, Charles Parnell, and Tilda Swinton. From the fans perspective, it looked like The Killer would be releasing in 2023, but it was recently confirmed that the graphic novel adaptation would hit Netflix in 2024. Seriously?
The Killer is based on the French graphic novel series, The Killer written by Alexis Nolent. The plot circles “a cold-blooded assassin who undergoes a psychological crisis in a world that has no moral compass.” It’s being billed as a noir thriller, which Fincher has no issue with as he’s directed films under the same genre such as Se7en in 1995 and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo in 2011.
The Academy Award nominated director signed a four year deal with Netflix in 2020, but worked with the streaming site prior. He produced and directed a handful of episodes of the hit series Mindhunter from 2017-2019, which is outstanding. He then began working on the current series Love, Death, and Robots in 2019.
Since his deal began, Fincher released the 2020 film Mank, which frankly I thought sucked. I love this man as a director and for him to essentially waste time on directing this attention suppressing film was disheartening. I comprehend that his father wrote the screenplay about Herman J. Mankiewicz and that’s why he directed it, but it was a waste. In 2021, Fincher produced the six episode, video essay series about film titled Voir. In that time though, Fincher has been working on The Killer.
About nine months ago, Emma-Jane Betts from The Digital Fix wrote an article about how The Killer had wrapped on filming. This is in no way Betts’ fault, but reading this article and now knowing how the film won’t hit streaming until 2024 stinks when she writes “However, considering how filming has now wrapped, it is possible that we may see the film out as early as late 2022 – just in time for award season.” If only this came true.
2023 is set to be a great year in film with new movies coming from the brains of Christopher Nolan with Oppenheimer, Wes Anderson with Asteroid City, and Martin Scorsese with Killers Of The Flower Moon. But as a Fincher fan, this was not fun news to be alerted to.
