Last night, veteran outfielder Dexter Fowler was traded from the Cardinals to the Angels for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Fowler gets reunited with his old manager, Joe Maddon.
Fowler had his best career season in 2016 when he was a Chicago Cub and was managed by Joe Maddon. In 2016, Fowler was an All Star and posted a .276 batting average, 126 hits, and 13 home runs. After that season, Fowler signed a five year, 82.5 million dollar deal with St. Louis. With only one year left on Fowlers deal and with him set to make 16.5 million, the Angels will pay Fowler 12.75 million of his contract.
This move frees up the Cardinals clogged outfield and Fowler will be the clear cut starter in right field for the Angels. With the addition of Fowler, the Angels have a very solid outfield with Trout, Upton, and now Fowler. Last season, Fowler, hit .233/.317/.389 (92 OPS+) with four home runs, 15 RBI’s and 14 runs in just 31 games.
