Today Travis Barker, Markus Hoppus, and Matt Skiba get to celebrate their greatest creations 22nd birthday, Enema of the State. Hopefully they’re throwing a bash and blasting The Party Song.
Enema of the State hit the ears of Blink-182 fans on June 1st, 1999 and was the bands third studio album. While it was Blinks third studio album, it was the first to feature the bands new drummer, Travis Barker who replaced Scott Raynor.
The trio turned to legendary punk rock producer Jerry Fin, who previously worked with Green Day on their breakout album Dookie, which was released in 1994.
Enema of the State quite possibly has one of the most recognizable cover arts of all time. It shows pornstar Janine Lindemulder dressed in a revealing nurses outfit, snapping a surgical glove on her right hand. The albums name is a pun based off of Enemy of the State and if you don’t know what an enema is, just use Google to help you out.
The album was a massive hit and turned the trio into one of the biggest rock bands on the globe. They sold a total of 15 million albums worldwide.
Maybe it’s my bias because I’m a Blink-182 fan but this album has one of the greatest track lists of all time. All the Small Things and What’s My Age Again? are the two biggest hits off the album and recognizable to anyone that knows anything about music. What’s My Age Again? was even remixed when the band toured for a short time a few years ago with Lil Wayne.
My personal favorite off of the album is one of the bands more serious songs, Adam’s Song. It’s a massive change of pace from songs like Aliens Exist and Dumpweed and concerns topics like suicide and depression. While the song is great, the change of tempo and meaning almost held it off the album.
Enema of the State is one of my favorite albums of all time and one I listen to when I’m Going Away to College. Happy Birthday Enema of the State.
