Happy birthday Irv Smith Jr. The Vikings tight end turns twenty three years old today and is primed to have a big season for 2021-2022.
Smith was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and attended Brother Martin High School in New Orleans. His father Irv Smith Sr. played college ball at Notre Dame and in the NFL but he wasn’t able to sway his son to to the Irish.
He originally was committed to Texas A&M but decomitted and decided to play for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
While in Tuscaloosa, Smith did not play in 2016, his freshman season. He made his biggest impact in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, he caught fourteen balls for one hundred and twenty eight yards and three touchdowns. He was a contributor on Alabamas National Title team.
The following season, Smith caught forty four passes for seven hundred and ten yards and seven touchdowns. He was named Second Team SEC.
Smith declared for the 2019 NFL Draft and was taken in the second round by my Minnesota Vikings. In his first season, Smith reeled in thirty six balls for three hundred and eleven yards and two touchdowns.
This past year, the Vikings were depleted but Smith progressed. He caught six less passes but went for three hundred and sixty five yards and five touchdowns. I think that Smith will have a huge season and be an awesome safety net for Kirk Cousins in year three.
Happy birthday Irv Smith Jr.
