Here's Why Ed O Should Become The Next UConn Head Coach
My pitch to Coach O to come to Storrs, CT.
It’s not the most desirable position in college. UConn football isn’t a Ferrari or a nice new boat, but with the proper coach at the helm, it has potential. And Ed O is the man for the job.
Ed Orgeron is 65-44 in his head coaching career. His first gig came at Ole Miss where he coached from 2005 to 2007. He even appeared in The Blind Side as one of the many SEC coaches who recruited Michael Oher.
Following that, Ed O took over at USC as the interim head coach after in 2013 after serving three years as the defensive line coach and defensive coordinator for the Trojans.
In 2015, Orgeron was hired by the LSU Tigers to coach the defensive line and then in 2016, he took over as head coach where he won an SEC Title and a National Championship with a Heisman quarterback.
Long and the short of it is, the guy is good and he’ll need some convincing to bring him to Storrs so here are my six main reasons why Orgeron should coach the Huskies.
Reason One: The Huskies have a young quarterback at the helm who has a lot of talent. Tyler Phommachanh has come in this season as a true freshman and played well against solid programs and his upside is massive.
This year in three games against Wyoming, Army, and Vanderbilt, Phommachanh posted 321 passing yards with a touchdown and has rushed 24 times for 92 yards and 2 scores. He is the clear cut starter when healthy and the future of the program.
If Coach O can work closely with Phommachanh for the next two years, he could work his magic and turn him into the next Burrow. I’m talking Heisman Trophy.
Reason Two: The Willington Pizza House is only an eight minute drive from the campus. While this isn’t crawfish and andouille, it’s unreal pan pizza.
The red potato pizza from the Willington Pizza House is to die for. It’s won multiple awards around the state as one of the top pizzas. The mix of broccoli with bacon and thinly sliced potatoes just works so well together.
In addition to the red potato pie, I could see the establishment naming a pizza after Coach O. Maybe a pie with crawfish on it or even a shrimp po boy type of pizza. Who knows, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Reason Three: The opportunity to play in the CUM Bowl is second to none. The UMass vs UConn rivalry is a budding battle between two squads that haven’t been great lately. With Uconn’s recent loss in the CUM Bowl, they need redemption and Ed O can help them win this big game.
Coach O can easily, EASILY, out coach Walt Bell and blow the Minutemen out by twenty plus. Also, who wouldn’t want to play in a game called the CUM Bowl.
Reason Four: Coach O is a unit of a guy who loves food. Well, after he eats his signature pie at the Willington Pizza House, he can top it off with a few scoops of ice cream at the UConn Dairy Bar.
It’s top notch ice cream that everyone likes and again, could Ed O get a flavor named after him? Who wouldn’t want to have some Ed O in their mouth? I really hope it wouldn’t be cajun flavored, but if that’s what it takes to get Ed O to UConn, I’m all in.
Reason Five: Coach Ogeron could become a celebrity at the yearly Oozeball game that takes place on North Campus. This is when faculty, students, and alumni gather to play volleyball in a mud pit every year.
Could you imagine seeing Ed O shirtless in the mud pit diving around. Everyones seen the video of him jogging shirtless and on the sidelines he is always dripping sweat so he would definitely get after it.
Coach O is also known to mingle with coeds and this would give him the chance to chase tail and find a new girlfriend since his recent divorce.
Reason Six: Joe Dowd. Simple as that. Joe Dowd would be a huge pull for Ed O to come to Storrs. Just look at this man.
Enough said.
