Huskies Heading to the Super Bowl
Two former Uconn Husky football players will be playing in the Super Bowl and they could have big roles.
Tampa Bay backup safety, Andrew Adams and Chiefs starting fullback, the sausage, Anthony Sherman will both be playing in Super Bowl 55. Both players were apart of the Uconn football team in college and will represent the Huskies in what could go down as one of the most entertaining Super Bowls ever.
Sherman played at Uconn from 2007-2011 and was a two time captain while lead blocking for two Big East Offensive Players of the Year, Donald Brown in 2008 and Jordan Todman in 2010. While Shermans college numbers don’t jump off the page he was influential in the Huskies short term success from 2007-2011.
He was a big time special teams player tallying 63 total tackles in his career while also reeling in 48 catches for 477 yards and 1 career touchdown. His success at the collegiate level made him a 5th round draft pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2011. He was traded out of Arizona in 2013 to Kansas City for cornerback Javier Arenas.
Sitting here in 2021 and looking back on that trade, it looks like the Chiefs won it. Sherman is a one time, second team All Pro selection and was a huge piece of the Chiefs Super Bowl win last season and could have the same influence in this years game.
Shermans versatility is the reason he is a top 3 fullback in the league and why he has stuck around the NFL for so long. In his career he has 66 receptions for 552 yards and 4 touchdowns while also, being pivotal on short yardage plays, blocking for Jamal Charles, Spencer Ware, and now Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Le’Veon Bell.
On the other sideline is Buccaneers backup safety, Andrew Adams who stepped up and played well against Green Bay last week for the injured Antoine Winfield Jr. and Jordan Whitehead. With those two guys still banged up, Adams may be called upon to matchup with Travis Kelce or Le’Veon Bell in the Super Bowl.
Adams started 33 games as a Husky and was a captain his senior season. In his senior season he led a dismal Uconn defense with 103 tackles and tacked on 3 interceptions and 7 pass break ups. He was not drafted in 2016 and landed on the New York Giants from 2016-2017. He’s bounced around the league from New York to Tampa in 2018 to the Lions and then back to the Buccaneers in 2019.
Through his 5 years in the league, he has made 166 tackles to go with 6 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles. He could be a huge factor in this game on special teams and if one of the starters happens to get hurt again.
It’s awesome seeing guys that you grew up watching play for your home state team and then make it to the biggest stage. These two guys could be a large part on how the game turns out with Adams on special teams or a 4th and short situation for Sherman.
