Is The Thanksgiving Sandwich The GOAT Of Sandwiches?
An open debate on sandwiches and here is my pitch for the Thanksgiving sandwich.
We’re into November so it is appropriate to now talk about Thanksgiving and whether you like it or not, Thanksgiving is the greatest holiday. Food, family, and football. The three F’s that make Thanksgiving awesome.
Now let’s get into the nitty gritty.
Whether you call it the Thanksgiving sandwich or the Pilgrim, there’s no debating that it is a top tier sandwich, and I would argue that it’s the best.
All I care about when it comes to the meal is that we have Hawaiian rolls and all the fixings because I won’t make a plate of food, I make a sandwich.
First, you start with the roll cut in half. Maybe you toast it, I prefer to have it right out the bag. Second, you mix the cranberry sauce with mayonnaise to create cranberry mayo. This right here is the key ingredient to the sandwich. DO NOT SKIP THIS.
Third, you’re going to want to warm up some mashed potatoes, not a lot of them. Once warm, you spread them over the cranberry mayo. Next, you’ll nuke some turkey. I prefer dark meat, it’s a little more moist. I traditionally do two bigger pieces and lay them atop the mashed potatoes.
Fifth, important step here, warm up some stuffing and gravy and once done, lay them on top of the turkey. Sixth step is an optional one. You can add lettuce or onion, I usually avoid this step, but if you choose to add it then more power too ya.
Final step, put the top of the bun on and enjoy. Now, you’re eating the best sandwich imaginable.
While you enjoy your sandwich, I’ll make my legitimate argument for the Thanksgiving sandwich.
So think about it, no other sandwich in contention could be deconstructed and work together the way a Thanksgiving meal does on a plate.
You would never deconstruct a reuben and eat it individual ingredient by individual ingredient. That goes the same for a turkey sandwich, or a ham sandwich, or even a peanut butter and jelly.
You’re taking an already great meal, a GREAT meal and making it into something electric and plussed up. By putting it on a Hawaiian roll, you’re adding a sweet element to the sandwich that pairs greatly with the saltiness from the gravy and stuffing.
Now you’re probably thinking “If all of the ingredients do work individually on a dinner plate, why don’t you just eat them the way they are?” Well, now you can combine multiple ingredients that work alone together into the perfect bite. Duh.
I firmly believe that the Thanksgiving sandwich is the GREATEST of all time. This doesn’t mean I don’t like a good reuben or a good fried chicken sandwich, but the best is the Thanksgiving sandwich.
