On the most recent episode of Is It Saturday Yet?, myself, Bryce Hopwood and Luke Owens talked about the state of the Heisman trophy and who we think should win it. We did acknowledge that the award has essentially followed in the foot steps of the NFL MVP award and traditionally goes to the nations best quarterback, but we listed who we think the four finalists should be purely off the merit of their play and not by what position they play.
Oregon QB Bo Nix
While I’ve been a notorious hater of Bo Nix in recent years, I must recognize that he is one of, if not the nations best player. The Ducks quarterback has thrown for 3,539 yards, 35 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions, while simultaneously rushing for 128 yards and 5 touchdowns. He’s also only been sacked 5 times. Nix has been the definition of efficient and poised this season and that could lead to him winning the Heisman trophy.
Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr.
Even though Maserati Marv doesn’t have the best numbers from a wide receiver this season, I think he’s still the most dominant pass catcher in the whole nation. He’s been a reliable target for the young gun Kyle McCord all season as he’s reeled in 62 passes for 1,093 yards and 13 touchdowns. If he can show out against Michigan and propel the Buckeyes to the playoffs again, then I think we could see him in New York for the Heisman ceremony.
Washington QB Michael Penix Jr.
When the year started, I picked Jordan Travis to win the Heisman. Then, Michael Penix Jr. emerged from the ashes in Seattle and I quickly jumped ship from Travis and hitched my wagon to Penix. The Huskies starting quarterback has thrown for 3,695 yards, 30 touchdowns and 7 interceptions this season while also rushing for 3. He has Washington standing undefeated and ranked fourth in the College Football Playoff rankings which is no small feat. Despite Nix having better numbers than Penix, he is still my pick to win the Heiman trophy.
UCLA OLB Laiatu Latu
I do think it’s ridiculous that it’s so rare for a defensive player to be a Heisman finalist. UCLA linebacker Laiatu Latu has made the Bruins defense one of the nations most feared this season as he’s totaled 46 tackles, 13 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 1 interception. Wherever he lines up, whether it’s off the edge, at 3-tech or over the center, he’s causing a commotion and making life unbearable for opposing quarterbacks which include last years Heisman winner, Cale Williams.
