Every Friday, new music drops and some weeks are great, others are duds. This Friday is far from a dud. We’ve got new music from the duo of Jack Harlow and Lil Nas X, Chris Webby and Young M.A., Phoenix Jack, and possibly Kanye West.
I want to start with a friend of the program, Phoenix Jack. Technically, Phoenix is a feature on the song that just dropped, High School. IRL, also known as Colin Drollett, produced the song and his name is on the song. Almost the same way that DJ Khaled does with his songs.
The song has a Khalid vibe very similar to his song 8TEEN. It’s somewhat upbeat and just has a great late summer, early fall type of vibe. Go check this song out and support two good dudes.
Staying the state of Connecticut, Chris Webby just released a new song, Whippin, with one of the greatest female rappers of all time, Young M.A. Hearing this duo come together is the collaboration that I didn’t know I needed.
My favorite lyric is when Webby opens his verse with “I can ride my bike with no handlebars”. The lyric pays homage to the song Handlebars by the Flobots. Whippin has that string beat in the background that is extremely similar to Handlebars.
Young M.A is awesome and anytime she drops music, I’ll listen to it and I love hearing a guy from Connecticut as big as Webby work with huge artists. Go listen to Whippin and support a Connecticut guy, born and raised.
Next up is Jack Harlow and Lil Nas X, a pretty solid new duo. Lil Nas X picked Jack Harlow to be the feature and DAMN, did he make the correct pick. Industry Baby is an absolute banger that I wish had dropped earlier in the summer.
The music video is kind of odd. It has Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow in a maximum security prison. Lil Nas X is dancing in the shower, working out in the rec yard, and gets a delivery from Jack Harlow who is dropping books off to inmates. Very Shawshank esque as Lil Nas X opend the book and takes a small hammer out it. He digs a whole but doesn’t have to climb through a mile of shit like Andy Dufresne.
When Harlow starts his verse, he’s making out with a female guard and then the prison goes on red alert when Lil Nas X starts to escape. Jack Harlow is probably my favorite current rapper so that’s probably why I enjoy this song so much.
In other news, Kanye West was supposed to drop Donda today but there is no sighting of it on my Apple Music. I’m hoping that we get it with in the next week, just praying.
One note about Donda is that Kanye is coming off of a divorce with Kim Kardashian. The last album that Kanye released following a breakup was My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and that album was FIRE. Kanye, please drop Donda.
