While 2021 may not be over yet, the start of December cues everyone with Spotify and Apple Music to post their most listened to songs, albums, and artists.
So, I went and checked my Apple Music Replay and there was some surprise, but not much. My top five artists on the year were Spose by a country mile, Kanye West, Cam Groves, MC Lars, and Jack Harlow.
I thought that a good idea for a short series would be to countdown my top one hundred songs of the past eleven months for the readers to see.
Also, I’ll add the link to the song on Spotify because it comes up better than Apple music. Here we go!
100. You’re a Fucking Bitch Hope You Know That Shit by Mike Squires, Atlus, P.Mo, and Abstract (Remix)
This song was a remix that dropped in mid March of this year. The original song was just Atlus and Mike Squires with a different beat and in an Instagram post, Squires said he was approached by Atlus to remix it so he made a whole new beat and added P.Mo and Abstract.
It’s a great, angry rap song about three guys being crossed by the same girl who is sleeping with the three of them and they all seem to figure it out. A little surprised this one isn’t higher because I bumped the shit out of this when it first dropped.
99. Way Out by Jack Harlow and Big Sean
I love this song. And the reason that this isn’t higher on my list is because the bass in the song didn’t work with my car speakers so it wasn’t able to climb higher.
Jack Harlow with Big Sean is a duo that we didn’t know we needed and I’m glad it’s here. I probably played this hit in the locker room the most this year because the beat just fit the vibe of a locker room setting. “Shit is a jam, shit is a jam”.
The lyrics of the song also make for a great workout song about being better than people who don’t like you when Harlow raps “Motherfuckers hate you when they lookin’ for a way out”. Or a pregaming song when you’re about to go out because you’re trying to build confidence and listening to Harlow rap about girls he’s got all over the nation makes you think “I could be like that”.
98. Bust a Move by Young MC
Much like Way Out, Bust a Move is the ultimate pregaming song but it’s more realistic about being a dude that’s hitting the bar. You’re going to get shot down, but you’ve got to keep shooting your shot and thats what Young MC does.
He ultimately figures out that the best way to pull is to be a good dancer. Just bust a move.
I won’t lie, I played this song a lot in the car with friends because I know all the words to it and wanted to flex that I did. Is it a hardo move? Yeah probably. Was it sick when I spit the whole song. I think so.
97. Checkers or Chess by Spose
I’d have to say I played this song the most when I was at the gym. It starts off with an old school theme of horns and drums yet quickly turns to a rap beat and Spose rapping about out smarting the people against you.
“I’m just trying to be better than yesterday, Better than the estimate, Cheddar from my escapades, Competitor to every name”.
This is almost like Spose has beat his enemies and knowing that they’re just haters because he raps in the chorus “Do you hate it that I made it from a pawn to a king?” He’s won. A great song to listen to mid workout.
96. Swagless by Spose and Stiky-1
Here’s an interesting one. Swagless is a low beat song where Spose raps in a self deprecating calling him self ugly, clumsy, celibate, and how Jerry Sandusky wouldn’t even molest him.
I think that the part of the song I like the most is the obscure audio clips he adds in that I still haven’t figured out where they’re from.
It’s a guy who’s telling a story about picking up this “fat” girl who had “the most humungous tits you’ve ever seen”. Her name was Susie Sparks and he details going to a house, smoking weed and drinking with her and a friend and later has sex with her when he brings her home.
After doing a little research, I found a Susie Sparks on Google who I guess was an actress, but I mean she has “humungous tits”. There’s got to be some relation between this and the song, but I’m not playing detective today.
95. Your Twenties by Spose
Spose is the master of using horns and drums in a rap song and knowing what’ll really work and Your Twenties is a song that has all of those instruments and works.
Your Twenties is like an odd fever dream where Spose raps about walking through the mountains and finding a golden coin. He falls through a door that takes him into a world of naked ladies and later raps about seeing an old man laying in grass. It’s a truly bizarre song, but I love it.
This one got a lot of play because I love the We All Got Lost album and would consistently shuffle it and just let the songs play.
94. I Will Let You Down by Spose and TheWorst
Whenever I’m sad or upset or feel like I messed up, I do wallow in the feeling a little by listening to sad music or music that may beat you down a little bit. I do think it’s needed before you try to rebound.
Well, I Will Let You Down is that song. It enjoyed in the chorus when Spose sings “I’m way better with people who I don’t know”, and that is true sometimes. It sometimes feels difficult to communicate with people you know and are close with then maybe a distant friend or stranger because they don’t have a preconceived notion of you.
Spose sings about trying to good deeds to people who don’t know you, like helping special needs children or walking an elderly person across that road, but knowing you’ll later let people you’re close with down.
93. Greatest Shit Ever by Spose
When you’re having a good day or need to flip how your day is going, throw this song on. Spose details small shit that makes your day a whole lot better like not having to pay for your coffee at Dunks or posting a video to YouTube and no one disliking it.
I probably jammed to this the most when I was driving to work at Big Y because I didn’t love it and needed to turn my day around and have a better attitude. One of my all time favorite Spose songs.
92. Drivers License by Olivia Rodrigo
Everyone knows good 4 u as the big Olivia Rodrigo hit, but Drivers License came out before good 4 u and became a hit on Tik Tok.
This was like a guilty pleasure song because it’s not an up beat one that you can really sing along to, it’s slow and somewhat sad. I think the most I listened to this was when I’d fall asleep on my “Sleep Playlist” because it was so mellow.
91. Rich Man by Schaffer The Darklord and LadyLovely
I started listening to Schaffer The Darklord this year off the back of MC Lars who I found through Spose so we are deep down the rabbit hole.
Rich Man starts off with the vibe of an alternate future world where the rich run everything and the poor are imprisoned. That’s when Schaffer The Darklord comes in and raps about the things he wishes he had if he was rich like a place in the Hamptons and a fifty foot yacht.
One part of the song I’m not huge on is the ending where he muffles his sound like he is talking through a megaphone. Overall though it’s a good song.
