Shane Gillis' New Special 'Beautiful Dogs' Is A Hilarious And Poignant Follow Up To 'Shane Gillis: Live In Austin'
The Big Kahuna strikes again.
Today, Netflix dropped their most recent comedy special from the Big Kahuna, Shane Gillis titled Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs. This was Gillis’ second special, but his first working with Netflix. His first one, Shane Gillis: Live In Austin which came out in 2021, was hysterical as he crafted jokes about former President Donald Trump debating Republican opponents, volleyball shorts, and how football is bigger than racism in the country. It had me absolutely howling when I listened to it in my bed recently to the point where I was crying when he joked about if transgender people made a football team and could run the ball efficiently, they’d be looked at differently by Republicans. Great content.
With this being Gillis’ second special and having built up a strong fanbase, we expected a lot of new material, but also some of his old standbys, and that’s what we got.
Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs incorporated a lot of political jokes, jokes about Navy Seals, and jokes about jerking off and having sex — a common topic on his podcast, Matt and Shanes Secret Podcast. While some of these topics feel stale or generic, Gillis added a great twist to them to make you laugh and appreciate the originality of the jokes. When it came to Navy Seals, Gillis joked about his girlfriends ex being a Navy Seal and how he can’t live up to the Navy Seals sexual prowess.
The same went for him talking about people with down syndrome. It’s easy for a comedian to slip into distasteful when joking about people with special needs, but he made really funny jokes putting people with down syndrome in a positive light. Gillis joked about how people with down syndrome love two things — John Cena and boobs. That’s hilarious. He also told a really funny story about his uncle who has down syndrome and how he sneaks grilled cheese sandwiches into restaurants. In no way did Gillis disparage the down syndrome community while still making really funny and astute observations.
While I found the entirety of Gillis’ special to be funny, the perfect and funniest jokes that he told was about when he went to George Washingtons plantation in DC over Covid-19. He made hilarious remarks about how the people working at the plantation, the reenactors, didn’t break character even though he was the only person on the tour. Gillis even joked about how he interacted with a slave reenactor who thought Gillis had down syndrome. Just an absolutely hysterical string of jokes.
In this review, I didn’t do Gillis’ timing or comedic genius the justice it deserves, so if you have Netflix, I highly recommend you listen to his latest special, Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs. At only 52 minutes long, this serves as something funny to watch when you’re winding down at the end of the night or a hilarious special to put on when driving in your car. Either way, give it a listen.
