One of my favorite song by Spose is Nobody featuring Watsky because I have actually been a fan of Watsky longer than Spose so hearing these two hop on a track is just amazing. Nobody is the fifteenth and final song off of the Why Am I So Happy? album.
I believe that Nobody is about someone that is born or in a situation where the cards are stacked against them and society expects them to just fold and be an insignificant person in society.
Spose begins the song with a double entendre when he spits “I was nobody (nobody), nobody believed, Pregnant women couldn’t even conceive”. He uses conceive in the term of women giving birth and conceive in the way someone believes or manifests.
“Man they used to laugh at him, thought that I was ludicrous, I don't mean the rapper, just the adjective, man can you imagine it?” This is one of my favorite line of the whole song because he uses another double entendre but explains how people thought he was ludicrous, crazy, not the rapper.
The end of this verse, Spose raps “Man look at Ryan go, the way I carry a mic, I'm gonna end up with some flowers on my burial site”. He believes that he has become somebody and has transformed from being Nobody. His legacy will be remembered by fans with flowers on his grave.
In the prehook Spose raps, “But I was supposed to curl up, I was supposed to back down, I was supposed to fade, evaporate into the background, I was supposed to never be nothing but made it to something, I knew I could do it, I will make it through it I'll prove it, I was just another human who was supposed to be…” and then it rolls into the hook which is a duet between Spose and Stefanie Berecz.
What Spose raps about in the prehook is that his whole life he had so much shit going against him but he persevered to break through so he didn’t end up as Nobody.
In verse two, Spose takes the angle of rapping about possible fans that were going through different issues in their life similar to Spose and when they found his music, they realized that they weren’t alone.
“He felt like Chris, and 'Jimmy!' made him feel good, Her whole perspective changed when she hearWd 'Knocking On Wood”. Spose’s song “Jimmy” is about a nerd who was bullied and eventually got revenge on his bully by round housing him in a CVS and “Knocking On Wood” talks about how you need to be thankful for what you have. Both are feel good songs.
The next verse, Spose spits, “He got arrested in college, that shit was not planned, He was scurred, then he heard 'God Damn”. In the song “God Damn” and even in “Hide Your Drugs”, Spose talks about his arrest in college for the possession of weed. He’s shown how he’s bounced back from what many people would consider a life altering event and is able to be a positive influence to those who have gone through the same stuff.
Quite possibly my favorite line from the song is “but I couldn’t fathom, That my words could be the light that lead the weary out the cavern”. He never realized that a dude from Southern Maine that has issues of his own could bring others out of a dark place.
The prehook and hook play and then another legend hops on the track, George Watsky. He brings the aspect that to go from Nobody to somebody you need “smart choices and dumb luck”. And because of smart choices and dumb luck, “there's billionaire dumbfucks, Geniuses driving dump trucks, Suckers with Lexuses, experts who won't make one buck”.
Watsky wraps that to be successful you can be smart and work your ass off but you’re also going to need the right breaks in life.
His verse is long and filled with motivational rap but the way he ends it is awesome. “So you can bring the lobster, me and Spose will bring the pain, It's Watsky and the fucking King of Maine”. Watsky pays tribute to a Maine tradition of lobster but, lets people know that him and Spose are going to be resilient and “bring the pain”.Nobody ends with the prehook, hook, and a post hook.
Man, this song is a masterpiece. Anytime I get to hear Spose work with a fellow legend like Watsky, Ekoh, or Chris Webby, it’s just amazing.
Next week, I will be writing about a Spose feature from the song “TURF” by JR Specs.
