Red Cup is a song by Cash Cash that features Spose and Lacey Schwimmer that dropped in 2010. It is actually a song that I came across very recently and loved Sposes feature on the tail end of the song.
The premise of the song is about not wanting to settle down and get married. A guy who wants to stay living the bachelor life, free and easy. Sposes nine line verse is him spitting fast bars from the perspective of a dude that has absolutely no intentions of getting dragged down by the old “ball and chain”.
He starts off rapping “It's cute you want a marriage, ring finger karats, So that you can call up Karen and tell her, "He went to Jared!"". He speaks here about how a woman wants that diamond on her ring finger to essentially flex to friends and family members on social media and make “the call” to her closest friends and mother. Maine Gretzky ends the line saying “and tell her, "He went to Jared!"", referring to the jewelry store, Jared.
“Girl, I'm a lone wolf and I'm a free bird, Lynard Skynard, I'm a sinner, taking women to dinner”. I absolutely love the Free Bird reference right here by the King of Maine when he refers to himself. Anytime I hear someone talk about being a lone wolf, I immediately think about Zach Galifianakis in the Hangover movies because, he calls himself a one man wolf pack.
I think the second portion of this line is interesting when he says “I'm a sinner, taking women to dinner”. I think what Spose is trying to get at is that he is down to clown after a night out but, has no interest in making these women his wife.
The last part of this fire verse is “Go tell your parents, I'm not awesome, I'm awful
I won't settle down like Jamestown, drive 'round, hat crooked, looking for the brothel”. Once again, Spose bring in a unique reference when he says “I won't settle down like Jamestown”. The way he brings Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in Virginia, into a song about wanting to be single is unreal and I cannot think of many rappers that have the ability to pull this off.
I would have to say that Red Cup definitely falls in my top three song that Spizzy Spose features on. While his verse isn’t extremely lengthy, he packs a lot of unique and out of the box references into it.
Next week, I’ll be diving into the song Nobody featuring Watsky, another goat, off of the Why Am I So Happy? album.
