And we are back for another Spose Saturday. This weekend I’ll be covering the song Self Help! that originally released as a single, but was the second track on his recent album Get Rich or Die Ryan.
Self Help! is performed by Spose and The Humans. The bands guitarists Dave Gutter and KG Freeze are on the backup vocals of the two minute and forty five second head banger.
The song is about how you need to stop feeling sorry for yourself and how you need to stop looking for someone to save you. No one is going to save you, the only thing that’ll save you is Self Help!
Self Help! comes at you fast and hard when Spose yells “SELF HELP!” and the band starts playing. No lead up to the band getting into it, it’s as if you’re pressing play.
The song opens with a chorus “Self-help, you better help yourself 'cause no one's going to, Self-help, no one gives a fuck what you've been going through, You have got to save yourself, 'Cause you won't get nobody's help”.
It’s true. You cannot rely on others because in the end, no one cares what you’re really going through.
Verse one opens with Spose singing “This world is cold, mama, oh, mama, Scripted like a soap opera, this is no shocker, Go harder, go farther, or be broke, father, Be a phone with no charger out in hell's harbor”.
The world is a cold place that has lots in store for you from the day you’re born to the day in which you drop dead. You’ve either got to nut up or lay down.
“Here's what I saw when I looked in the bottle, Just a middle finger to my sorrows, No one cares, run and hide, If you're scared, fuck your life”. Some people turn to booze when life is beating you down and if you think that’s a solution you’re wrong. The bottle doesn’t care about your feelings.
“Here's the deal, there's only one ally you can turn to in the end, Only one person lasted after all of your friends, When all the flies flee, when it hurts, when it bleeds, There's only one cure for the disease, SELF HELP!”
This is the theme and message of the entire song. When your friends fly the coop and you have no one to turn to, you need yourself and Self Help!
The first verse concludes and Spose and The Humans get back into the chorus.
The second verse by Spose takes a wider look at the world. “Life is a bitch, bitch, You better go, go, 'Cause only the fittest, cannibalistic, Capitalistic, assume the position”.
Only the people on the top of the food chain in the world will survive, but he’s trying to say that if you have guts and believe in yourself, you can battle against the people high up in the world.
“They want you to fuck up, that's all part of the plan, Humiliate and rape you, profit when they break you, There is only one thing that can save you”. The only thing that can save you from succumbing to the people trying to bring you down is Self Help!
I believe that Self Help! is telling people that if you’re struggling mentally and don’t have someone to talk to, you need to seek help whether it’s confiding in a therapist or a hotline, you’re the most important person in YOUR life. Get Self Help!
