While Spose’s song writing is meant to relate to the common man because, he is a common man, this song really hits to everyone who has had a dream. Every person that works a typical 9-5 or works pay check to pay check has had a dream of being in a different career, being an actor or musician, or were just one step away from making it big but, fell victim to the abyss that a 9-5 represents.
We All Got Lost is the 11th song on the We All Got Lost album. The song begins with “Look, I think they set us up to let us down, Cause I don't quite know what to do, where to go, who I am, where I am right now, Thought I would be on top, with a pool and a yacht by 29, 23, she's pregnant, I'm unemployed, we gon' be fine”. He speaks of his dreams of being a huge star and how they did not pan out the way he envisioned. In addition to his dreams not materializing, he has fallen onto hard times. He has no job with a kid on the way.
A line that sticks out in the first verse is “This debt addressed to boulevard of broken dreams”. A reference to the Green Day hit Boulevard of Broken Dreams which is about being lonely and having you dreams crushed. In true Spizzy Spose fashion, he turns a song about people having their hearts broken into an absolute head banger. The way in which he is able to do this song after song is unbelievable.
“Reality was gruesome when it grew from the illusion, Feel like I was headed somewhere don't remember where it was, Somebody yelled, "Join the club!". Hearing that “join the club” goes back to what I said before. Many people, just about everyone, have gone through an event that crushed dreams or have had to settle down in a job that is a far cry from what they wanted their life to be.
The beginning of the second verse really sticks out because, it shows that you may have something you love but, cannot have. “I went both directions at the fork and I got split in half, I made the mistake of tryna have my cake and eat it”. He uses two very common phrases that are used for small conundrums but, makes it represent the massive life decisions that many have to make to either pursue a dream or settle in and live their life out.
“For every former emcee who used to rap to the beat, And had to sell his microphone cause life isn't cheap, For every girl who became a mom, whoops, on accident, Wasn't even tryna have a kid, you were just practicing, For every musician that should have made it, never did, And traded in their dreams but got this job with benefits, And went to school and got the job, but never got happy, What the fuck is going on?, We followed the instructions and arrived at the mirage, Thought everything went wrong, Then I turned on my flashlight in the fog”.
The above verse talks about encounters and events that make a huge impact in individuals lives. For example, the girl who probably had a dream to goto college or pursue a different career but, was knocked up and now she has to buckle down and become a parent. We saw it in 2020 how life comes at you fast and how we must learn to adapt so, people in these positions made the “smart” choice and adapted. While it is the “smart” choice, it’s not the desired one.
The third and final verse tells a story of a young man who got caught smoking weed and had his athletic scholarship revoked. This event caused a domino effect in his life leading him to become unemployed in his hometown. Every now and again he will see his old high school coach and feels embarrassed that he let him down.
In the second portion of the third verse, Spose tells another story of a person who “got lost”. It’s a young girl who has aspirations of becoming an actress so she moves to the epicenter of famous people, Hollywood. Like many others who move to L.A, she falls into the trap of not getting acting gigs and working as a waitress, a pretty good one. Her life is quickly falling apart. “10 years later she's a damn good waitress, So I tipped her good, said it's lonely at the top, She said she was lonely I said, "No you're not". She isn’t alone because, all of us in some way are lost.
At this point in my life, I believe I am approaching the fork in the road that Spose rapped about. Which way do I go? Do I do the responsible thing and continue my education or do I try to pursue podcasting and blogging? The answer for my parents is pretty clear and I think that the answer should be clear for myself but, I have found something I deeply love. Maybe, just maybe right now, I am getting lost.
This was a fun one to dissect. Next Saturday, I will dive into a song that Spose features on, Red Cup by Cash Cash featuring Lacey Schwimmer and Spose.
