Roll Zags Roll! Both the men’s and women’s Gonzaga hoops teams have won the West Coast Conference and punched their tickets to the dance. The men’s team beat BYU 88-78 and the women’s team also beat BYU 43-42.
For the women’s squad, they found themselves down 36-27 to the Cougars going into the fourth quarter and clawed back into the game. Down by two with limited time, Zags player Jill Townsend threw up a prayer and as the buzzer sounded, the ball found the bottom of the basket.
That buzzer beater was Townsends only 2 points of the game.
The Zags were led by forward Yvonne Ejim who came off the bench and scored 13 points to go with her 9 rebounds. For the Cougars, their guard tandem of Shaylee Gonzales and Paisley Harding combined for 25 points and 8 rebounds.
As for the men’s team, they also found themselves down in their competition. At the half, the Cougars had the Bulldogs on the ropes as they went into the locker room holding a 12 point lead.
For the first fifteen minutes of the second half, BYU kept their lead but, the Zags proved why their number one. They ended up coming back and winning 88-78.
Freshman guard Jalen Suggs went for 23 points while guard Joel Ayayi had 18 points and 9 rebounds for Gonzaga. On the BYU side, they were led by guard Trevin Knell off the bench who scored 20 points.
All around, there is only one thing to say. It’s a great day to be a Gonzaga Bulldog.
