WOAH, a This Day in Music History and a This Day in Sports History on the same day. Some wild stuff but June 17th is a big day in both world. In the realm of sports, in 1994 on this day is when the famous O.J. Simpson Bronco chase occurred and two years prior in 1992, Charles Barkley was sent to the Phoenix Suns from the 76ers in exchange for Jeff Hornacek, Andrew Lang, and Tim Perry. In music, Avicii released the song Wake Me Up with vocals from Aloe Blacc.
It’s super unfortunate and sad that Avicii took his own life in 2018 but his legacy lives on. While a song like Levels is seen as a tier one Avicii song, Wake Me Up should also fall in that category. It’s an amazing song with tremendous vocals from Aloe Blacc.
The four minute and nine second banger won the Echo Award for Song of the Year, iHeart Radio Dance Song of the Year, and the Billboard Music Top Electronic/ Dance song.
When this song came out in 2013, it absolutely blew up and it seemed like Avicii and Aloe Blacc had a pretty solid duo in the music industry. In 2020, two years after after Avicii took his own life, Aloe Blacc honored him with a performance at the Billboard Live At-Home Concert.
