This Day In Sports History; February 1st
6 years ago today, NFL fans were treated to one of the greatest Super Bowls of all time.
I’m not a great artist but, let me try to paint a picture for you. Its February 1st, 2015 and in Enfield, CT there was probably snow on the ground but, in Glendale, Arizona it was sunny and the University of Phoenix Stadium played host to Super Bowl 49.
Russel Wilson walked into the game with the legendary “Legion of Boom”. This would be one of the last times the L.O.B would play together as one unit and they did not go out the right way. On the other sideline, Tom Brady was looking for his fourth Super Bowl win with an elite repertoire of weapons including Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, and Shane Vereen.
I could go through the whole play-by-play of the game but, none of that really matters because, one moment made this game one of the greatest Super Bowls ever. It was when Katy Perry performed “Roar” at Halftime, good lord was that a riveting performance that brought a tear to my eye.
In all seriousness, the last minute of this game was some of the best and most exciting football I have ever witnessed. With Seattle down 28-24, Jermaine Kearse pulled in a huge catch while he was laying on his back and set the Seahawks up in awesome field position to win the game. It felt very David Tyree esque and many Patriots fans, including my father freaked out, they had seen this movie before.
The next play, Dont’a Hightower tackled Marshawn Lynch after he picked up four yards and brought the ball to the one yard line. This next play will go down in history as one of the most controversial play calls ever.
“Play clock at 5, pass is INTERCEPTED at the goal line by Malcom Butler! UNREAL.” That was the call by Al Michaels when Seattle forgot that they had one of the best power backs in NFL history and that if they handed him the ball, he would have ran right behind Max Unger and strolled into the end zone.
The game ended with Seattle defensive end, Michael Bennett brawling with Rob Gronkowski and that was the cherry on top of the sundae, and that sundae was an awesome Super Bowl. I’m not even a Patriots fan but, I was on the edge of my seat the whole game and entertained for 60 minutes.
