Top Ten Summer Songs
We're in the heart of summer so let me tell you what ten songs should be on your summer playlist.
With tomorrow being my birthd-, I mean the Fourth of July, many of you reading this probably already have your summer playlist ready but, they’re probably not that great. Here are my top ten summer songs that need to be in your rotation.
Honorable Mention: Return of the Mack by Mack Morrison, All the Small Things by Blink-182, Ants Marching by Dave Matthews Band, I Go Back by Kenny Chesney, Mr. Brightside by the Killers, Shotgun (The Wild Remix) by George Ezra, Jordan Belfort by Wes Walker and Dyl
10. Fat Lip by Sum 41: Welcome to the top ten. I’m a huge fan of music that makes you want to bang your head and scream the lyrics and Fat Lip is the perfect song. While throwing my head and letting my mullet flop around probably isn’t the safest to do while driving, Fat Lip just gets me in the right mood.
I also like this song for the summer because this is the time that all of my high school friends and I get together to hang out and in Fat Lip it says “I know I'm not the one you thought you knew back in high school”. This lyric really hits deep because in the summer time, you get to see how much you and your friends have changed while being away from one another.
9. American Kids by Kenny Chesney: I fully believe that American Kids can only be played between the months of April and September because if it gets played in the middle of January the songs gets ruined.
American Kids is about growing up in the midwest, something I never experienced, but it has that summer feel. Kenny Chesney sings about football practice and the air conditioner not working so that 100% represents the summer.
8. Doses and Mimosas by Cherub: So, the first time that I heard Doses and Mimosas was when I was going out on my friends boat last summer, shoutout to the Wells family, and when I heard it, the vibe just felt right. It’s not a song that’ll fire you up like the number one song on here but it will put you in the perfect mood.
It starts off with a slow beat and the beat kind of speeds up, just a bit. Even though it’s a slow song, it does make a party great or any get together. Playing it on the beach is the ultimate place to sing “To all the bitch ass hoes, that hate me the most, yeah I hate you too”. Doses and Mimosas deserves a spot in the top ten.
7. Red Solo Cup by Toby Keith: Red Solo Cup was a lock for this top ten, probably one of three locks. It’s the perfect song to throw on at a party because you’ll see every guy and gal put their cup in the air and shout “RED SOLO CUP, I FILL YOU UP, LETS HAVE A PARTY”. There isn’t any other explanation needed. Great song.
6. The Spins by Mac Miller: This right here is my absolute favorite Mac Miller jam. The vibe that this song gives out is out of this world. The beat along with the lyrics that are easy to rap makes it the perfect summer time jam to play when you and your friends are hanging out.
“You wanna get a mansion, a jacuzzi” uh yes, I would like a mansion and jacuzzi this summer Mr. Miller. R.I.P. Mac Miller.
5. Party In the U.S.A. by Miley Cyrus: Now, if you play this song around ten football players, prepare to be blown away be an American Idol esque performance. Two years ago around Christmas, I was at Toads Place in New Haven and in between Christmas song remixes, this song came on and I swear to God, everyone was singing it.
This song is more than a summer song because the example I used was from the winter. It brings back great memories for kids born between 1997 and 2004, almost a cult like experience whenever it comes on the stereo. It fits in the top five of summer songs because it’s about partying in the greatest country in the world, the U.S. of A.
4. The Thrill by Wiz Khalifa and Empire of the Sun: “Searching for the thrill of it, thrill of it”. That’s what summer is all about, searching for fun things to do with your friends that verge on your parents disapproval.
When The Thrill comes on in the car and Wiz is rapping, I kind of bop my arms up and down because that’s the only dancing I can do without crashing on 91 south. I honestly cannot recommend this song enough. Play it at the beach, a bonfire, on a boat, on a plane, at a funeral. Well maybe not at a funeral but you catch my drift.
3. Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind: Fat Lip, Semi-Charmed Life, and most songs from this punk rock era are phenomenal. If I could be a teen in any music era it would no doubt be in that one.
Semi-Charmed Life is just the perfect song to sing every word to when you’re either driving with a car full of friends of on your own. If you’re out on a boat or on vacation and you Semi-Charmed Life, you kind of feel like you do have a Semi-Charmed Life. This song just feels like things are going good for you.
2. Pursuit of Happiness by Kid Cudi: The past few songs have been great but, none of them capture the vibe of a nighttime summer drive like Pursuit of Happiness does. Whether you’re with your boys in a car just cruising or by yourself, Pursuit of Happiness just hit’s the right spot.
The other aspect of Pursuit of Happiness that is immaculate is that I’ve heard it at many parties and while it’s not a fast paced song, it picks up any function or get together you’re at. I have absolutely zero qualms putting Pursuit of Happiness at number two.
1. Levels by Avicii: First off, thanks to all of the other songs that tried to compete with Levels. You just had to know that the ultimate hype song by the greatest DJ of all time was going to earn the number one spot.
Part of the reason that Levels is number one is because you can remix any, and I mean ANY song with it and it will turn any get together from a ten to a twenty. There really isn’t much to say about it other than the fact that IT GETS THE PEOPLE GOING. R.I.P. Avicii.
