A Team of Destiny... National Champions

It’s been two years since the LSU Tigers won the National Championship, and it still fascinates me that this team was assembled with so much talent.

Fourteen players from that team were drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft while six were signed as undrafted free agents. Five players from that team in the 2020 Draft were first round picks while another five were selected in the second and third round.

The following year, seven LSU players from the National Championship team were taken in the 2021 NFL Draft.

This LSU team was unlike any team I’d ever laid my eyes on. I never got to witness the great Miami teams of the late 90’s, early 2000’s or the mid 2000’s USC squads, but this LSU team has been compared to the two because of how dominant they were.

The Joe Burrow led offense outscored their opponents 726-328 and won the National Title against Clemson 42-25. In fifteen games, the Tigers rolled seven top ten opponents.

LSU had the Heisman winning quarterback in Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase who won the Biletnikoff Award, Grant Delpit who won the Thorpe Award, and the SEC Newcomer of the Year in Derek Stingley Jr. Ed O was named AP Coach of the Year while the Tigers offensive coordinator Joe Brady received the Broyles Award.

When the final College Football Playoff rankings released, LSU was ranked number one overall and had a date with the Oklahoma Sooners. Burrow, Chase, and the rest of the Tigers made quick work of Jalen Hurts and the Sooners as they trounced them 63-28.

In the National Championship, LSU squared off with a very talented Clemson squad that was led by Trevor Lawrence. This Clemson squad was legit. They had Travis Etienne in the backfield and Amari Rodgers, Justyn Ross, and Tee Higgins out wide.

On defense, Dabos squad was anchored by defensive backs Tanner Muse and A.J. Terrell with linebackers Isaiah Simmons and James Skalski running wild. But LSU had an answer for everything that Clemson threw at them.

Burrow threw for 463 yards with 5 touchdowns while their running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 110 yards and Ja’Marr chase reeled in 9 balls for 221 yards and 2 scores. This team was outstanding.

What makes this win even more awesome for LSU is that the game was played in New Orleans so the LSU Tigers partied like animals. The best thing we got from that win though was the cigar pics and videos of Joe Burrow.

Since this LSU team, we haven’t seen an offense like that in college football. I’d kill to see Notre Dame play like that, but I’m not sure that’s going to happen so happy two years to the LSU Tigers.
