Vikings Hire Wes Phillips, Son Of Wade Phillips, As Offensive Coordinator
The Vikings are building an offensive powerhouse.
Minnesota has taken the next step in becoming contenders for the 2022-2023 NFL season by hiring the Rams pass game coordinator, Wes Phillips, as the teams offensive coordinator. Wes is the son of legendary NFL head coach and defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.
Wes played his college ball at University of Texas El Paso as a quarterback and from 2002 to 2003 played for the San Diego Riptide in the Arena Football League. After a short stint in the arena league, Phillips kicked off his coaching career at his alma mater, UTEP as a student assistant in 2003.
Following a year back at UTEP, Phillips coached quarterbacks at West Texas A&M from 2004 to 2005 and then held the same position at Baylor in 2006. After a one year stint with Baylor, Phillips was hired by the Cowboys for his first NFL job. He was with Dallas from 2007 to 2013. From 2007 to 2010 he served as the offensive assistant then from 2011 to 2012 was the teams assistant offensive line coach. In his final year in Dallas in 2013 he coached the tight ends group.
Phillips stayed in the NFC East and coached the Redskins tight end unit from 2014 to 2018. In 2019, the Rams hired him to coach the same position and then was promoted to the pass game coordinator for the 2021 season.
It seems like Phillips was effective as the pass game coordinator as Matthew Stafford tossed for 4,886 yards with 41 touchdowns. If he can drum up more of this magic then Kirk Cousins could become a front runner for league MVP and Justin Jefferson will win Offensive Player of the Year.
This is an exciting and new age hire for the Vikings and one that instills confidence in the fan base for the 2022 season.
