Oklahoma Lands CT Native And Wake Forest Transfer Rondell Bothroyd
The Sooners defense adds a stud defensive lineman.
On December 26th, Wake Forest defensive lineman Rondell Bothroyd announced that he’d be transferring and using his final year of eligibility to explore other opportunities. Well, the E.O. Smith High School alum wasn’t on the market long. Yesterday on January 8th, he announced in a Twitter post that he’d be transferring to Oklahoma to play for defensive guru Brent Venables.
In the past two seasons, Bothroyd has established himself as a force on the Demon Deacons defensive line and a team leader. In 2021, Bothroyd totaled 63 tackles, 16.5 for loss, 8 sacks, and forced 2 fumbles. His leadership and played made him one of Wake Forests 2022 team captains. This past season, he made 30 tackles, 8 for loss, 6 sacks, and deflected 3 passes.
This transfer feels beneficial for both Bothroyd and the Sooners. Oklahoma lands a dominant force that can play both defensive tackle and defensive end. Bothroyd gets the opportunity to work with veteran defensive guru Brent Venables.
In his time at Clemson as the Tigers defensive coordinator, Venables had sixteen defensive players taken in the top one hundred picks of the NFL Draft. This includes six defensive lineman. Vic Beasley Jr., Kevin Dodd, Shaq Lawson, Dexter Lawrence, Christian Wilkins, Clelin Ferrell all played under Venables. It’s safe to say that he has a great track record of getting guys to the league and Bothroyd could be next.
